II. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS
The Coordinator of Youth Ministry is responsible for the implementation of archdiocesan policies into the parish with the parish’s understanding of regulations related to youth ministry and serves as the lead agent to the Pastor. As presented in the USCCB document, Renewing the Vision, the Coordinator fosters a comprehensive approach to youth ministry that recognizes the cultural, developmental, and spiritual diversity among Catholic adolescents in and outside the school, as well as to parents and families. The Coordinator focuses on pastoral activities which empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ, drawing them into the life, mission and work of the Catholic faith community, with an emphasis on fostering the total personal and spiritual growth in each event.
III. POSITION CONTENT/ Essential Functions
1. The archdiocesan Coordinator of youth ministry models Christian discipleship and ensures that initiatives and
programs developed within a context that promotes growth in faith and maturing spiritually in our parish and our
school.
a. Works with the New Albany Deanery to increase our influence and outreach to youth.
b. Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to continuing education, professional development and excellence
in ministry.
c. Identifies and addresses learning needs and gaps in our own education and formation in ministry. Examines the
past and uses it as a framework for the future.
d. Integrates regular and ongoing continuing education in own professional life.
e. Identifies and develops leaders, calling forth their gifts for ministering to youth.
f. Oversees archdiocesan programs that lead youth to deeper faith and development.
g. Furthers the parish mission statement to learn, to live, and to proclaim the gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
2. The parish Coordinator leads adults and youth, providing them with inspiration, direction, resources, personal
witness and vision.
a. Directs and delegates responsibilities for parish programs in a clear spirit of service and delegates when
necessary.
b. With direction from the pastor’s new ideas and events, establishes a common vision for Catholic youth ministry.
Progresses with clear and definable objectives that never allow stagnation or maintenance of the status quo.
c. Invites, trains, supports and nourishes adult and adolescent leaders.
d. Develops, empowers, and nurtures lay ecclesial ministers according to youth needs: solid theological understanding,
relational and ministry skills, organizational ability, and a foundational spirituality rooted in the discipleship of Jesus
Christ.
e. Attends to the needs and hopes of all communities within the parish, paying close attention to cultural, geographic
and economic diversity.
f. Supports parish and school youth ministry leaders in achieving competence and certification by being certified
when needed.
g. Leads the parish in celebrating achievement and success in Catholic youth ministry.
3. The parish Coordinator leads by coordination and collaboration
a. Oversees the resources of the parish so that they are used wisely in ministry with adolescents and young adults.
b. Coordinates all facets of youth events and young adult events.
c. Collaborates with local parish and deanery youth and adult leaders overseeing the development, organization,
implementation, and sustainability of youth ministry programs on a parish level primarily, and deanery level
secondarily.
d. Meets periodically with deanery youth ministry leaders from 15 parishes in the New Albany Deanery by
gathering at Catalyst Catholic or Archdiocesan meetings.
e. Collaborates with the Archdiocese when appropriate.
4. The archdiocesan Coordinator serves as an advocate for youth ministry
a. Provides consultation to the, pastors, parish leaders and parish committees in the support of youth ministry efforts.
b. Insures that developmentally appropriate catechesis and opportunities for building leadership skills,
faithfulness, and community building are taking place for young people.
c. Networks with other youth agencies serving the wider community.
d. Develops relationships with Catholic media, Catalyst Catholic Office & parish communication office to ensure
positive coverage of youth ministry
5. The parish Coordinator is in charge of volunteer teams related to the development of comprehensive
youth ministry.
a. Supervises program and volunteers.
b. Provides regular communication with office staff, parish volunteers and pastor by attending weekly staff
meetings.
c. Participates in deanery, regional and national organizations that relate to the Franciscan charism and further
Franciscan values.
d. Monitors annual budget.
e. Understands policy development and implements policy updates.
f. Completes written end-of-year staff evaluation.
g. Participates in weekly staff meetings.
6. Performs other duties, as required by pastor.
IV. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND/OR ABILITIES
a. Knowledge of Catholic Church teachings, particularly as they apply to youth and young adults.
b. Experience in working with youth and young adults and knowledge of developmentally appropriate needs.
c. Excellent planning and organizational skills
d. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks
e. Well-developed verbal and written communications skills
f. Computer technology and social media knowledge and skills
g. Desire to invest in school social settings and build relationships within the school community, especially at
school lunches.
2. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE
a. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Theology or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
b. Ideally, 3 years of administrative experience on archdiocesan level.
c. At least 3 years parish youth ministry experience.
d. Ability to lead a class on a topic of religious education for youth and young adults

a. Must be a professed and practicing Catholic
b. The completion of safe environment training and a background check
4. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
a. The employee is expected to attend evening and weekend events, as necessary. Travel throughout the archdiocese
is required. In some cases, the needs of the position may require extra hours beyond the normal schedule.
b. Lay ministers are vital ministers sharing the mission of the Church. They are expected to be role models and are
expressly charged with leading parishioners toward Christian maturity and with teaching the Word of God.
As role models, the personal conduct of every lay minister, both at Church and away from Church, must
convey and be supportive of the teachings of the Catholic Church. These teachings include, but are not limited to: honoring the dignity of each human life from conception to natural death, care for all God’s creation, and the
belief that all persons are called to respect human sexuality and its expression in the Sacrament of Marriage
as a sign of God’s love and fidelity to His Church. The Seven Themes of Catholic Social Teaching can be found at

c. Determining whether a lay minister is conducting him/herself in accordance with the teachings of the Catholic
Church is an internal Church matter and is at the sole discretion of the pastor.
d. The Archdiocese recognizes that some lay ministers who contribute positively to the mission of the Church are not practicing Catholics. For lay ministers of other faith traditions, there remains an expectation that, regardless of
their personal religious affiliations and beliefs, they will become knowledgeable of Catholic Church teachings, will
be credible witnesses of the Catholic faith, and will be models of Christian values.
